Dino-Rabbits win at YCS Chicago

The title is pretty self-explanatory. The second place player also played Dino-Rabbit, which is pretty cool. Inzektors took 3rd and Chaos Dragons took 4th.

I didn't expect any difference from Dino-Rabbits in terms of their tournament results. Only difference in this YCS was that Veiler could negate Rabbit for a turn. It's nothing that significant, because it isn't difficult to keep Rabbit on the field if you have spells and traps to defend it.

That's pretty much it. I'm happy Dino-Rabbits won, and this short post was to express my thoughts.

Tournament Report 04/27/2012

Yesterday I participated in the first Locals in my area, without priority. I decided to play Dino-Rabbit, because I really want to top the next Regionals I go to, and I want to do it with deck. I did main 3 Macro Cosmos, along with a few other traps, which made my deck look more like an anti-meta deck. Anyway, this is what happened.

Round 1 vs Eatos Heroes (2-1)

1 - I don't believe I drew any Rabbits this game. I wasn't aware he played Eatos until turn 3. There were no monsters in his graveyard, due to his Macro Cosmos, so randomly dropped an Eatos. I destroyed with Warning, but he summoned another one and beat me to death with that and a Barbaros, with Skill Drain.
2 - I started and summoned Rabbit into Laggia, and set most of my hand. I had an answer for everything threatning he had, and I beat him with Laggia.
3 - He started, summoned Barbaros and special summoned Eatos, setting 2 traps. I draw and he activates Skill Drain. I activate Heavy Storm, destroying that Skill Drain and another one. I summon Rabbit and turn it into a Maestroke. I activate his effect to flip Barbaros face-down, and then I destroyed it in battle. I set most of my hand again. He drew, and immediately attacked Maestroke, but I had a Forbidden Lance, with made Eatos weaker, and then it was destroyed in battle. He summoned a Neos Alius, and I destroyed it with Warning. He used Monster Reborn on Barbaros, which let it have 3000 attack. He set a trap and ended. I draw and summon Tour Guide into another one, and made a Leviair. I then re-summoned Rabbit and banished it for 2 Sabersaurus. I flipped Barbaros face-down again with Maestroke, killed it with Maestroke, and attacked him directly with everything else. I made a Laggia and ended my turn. He drew and then scooped.

Maestroke won me that game. I am extremely happy that I put him in my extra deck.

Round 2 vs Inzektors (2-1)

1 - He goes first, used Foolish Burial to send a Hornet to the graveyard. He played a Dimensional Fissure, did some other things and ended his turn. I summoned Rabbit, which he negated. I set a bunch of traps and as soon as he drew, I flipped Macro Cosmos. He had no answers for that the entire game, so I slowly killed him.
2 - I didn't draw Macro or Rabbit, just a bunch of normal dinosaurs. He beat with some normal Inzektor plays.
3 - I controlled him with Macro again. I don't remember exactly how the game went, but I won because I played Heavy Storm and the Rabbit I eventually drew into.

So since there were only 10 people at this tournament, there were 3 undefeated players. I did end up getting paired down.

Round 3 vs Mason: Infernities (2-1)

Yay, I end up playing one of my teammates.

1 - He went first and ended up summoning an Archfiend and setting a trap. I destroyed it with MST, summoned Sabersaurus and kill it. I set a backrow and passed. He set a monster. I summoned Guaiba, used them to make a Laggia, and killed his face-down Necromancer. He set another monster and a trap. I drew an MST and activated it, and he activated Inferno, which I didn't negate with Laggia. Afterward, I summoned Kabazauls, attacked another Necromancer with Laggia, and attacked directly with Kabazauls. The game ended in my victory shortly after that.
2 - I don't remeber the exact details of this game because it went back and forth quite a bit. He did win though when I ran out of traps to use, including hand-traps.
3 - I summoned Rabbit, made Laggia, and set the rest of the hand. He just set some cards. I topdecked Tour Guide and he scooped. That was by far my sackiest game all day.

Top 4 was determined at this point. I obviously was in top 4, along with the Eatos Hero player from before, a Six Samurai player (also undefeated going into top 4) and a Dark World player.

Round 4 vs Six Samurai (2-1)

1 - He summoned Naturia Beast and Shi En first turn. I drew absolute shit and couldn't demolish his setup so I lost...
2 - I summoned Rabbit and made Laggia and set some traps. He didn't have enough cards to get through what I had so I won that one.
3 - He set 4 traps and a monster. I summoned Kabazauls and killed his face down Elder, then set some traps. He summoned Kizan and killed it. I drew Heavy Storm, with Rabbit in my hand already. I summoned another Kabazauls, and chained Torrential Tribute, which destroyed both monsters. I activated Heavy Storm and destroyed all his cards. My plan was to destroy the Kizan so Heavy Storm couldn't be negated by Musakani. He set another trap on his turn. I went and summoned Rabbit, made a Laggia, and locked him down from there.

Round 5 vs Eatos Heroes (2-0)

1 - I don't remember what happened this game at all, accept that he had 3 dead Miracle Fusions in his hand, because I had the Bottomless Trap Hole, and Macro Cosmos on the field to make them dead.
2 - He went first, played Prohibition and declared Rescue Rabbit, not like it mattered with my hand. He summoned Stratos, searched Alius, and set 1 trap. I summoned Thunder King and beat his Stratos, setting the rest of my hand, except for 1 card, and he activated Macro Cosmos. He summoned Neos Alius and attacked my Thunder King. I activated Lance during the damage step, killing Alius, and he passed. I attcked him directly with Thunder King and set another card. He summoned Crusader of Endymion, which I destroyed with Warning, so he couldn't activate a Gemini Spark. He set a card face-down and ended his turn. I drew and summoned Tour Guide into Sangan and made a Leviair. I used Leviair to summon his banished Crusader, and all my monsters attacked directly for game.

In conclusion, I went undefeated and won $20 store credit. I liked the inclusion of Macro in the deck. It hurt my Inzektor opponent, and Macro prevented a couple of Veilers from being dropped throughout the tournament. Of course, I will continue to playtest and experiment different ideas. I will get Forbidden Chalices soon, so I will enjoy using those. I wonder how many Rabbit players will top YCS Chicago and how those decks are structured.

A New Way to Play

With the removal of priority, players are experimenting different card choices to test the most successful way to fight the new metagame. There are very few popular decks that are unaffected, for the most part (Heroes, Dark World, Chain Burn...). However, other popular decks take a beating from this (Dino-Rabbit, Wind-Ups, Dragons). I'm personally working with Dino-Rabbit, as my own little project, to find the way to survive and advance.

Players in the OCG, and some TCG players, favoured Dimensional Fissure in the deck. The TCG players originally played this in order to fight off Maxx "C", Plant Synchro... However this card failed to stick around in the deck, and that was that. I contemplated maining 3 copies of Dimensional Fissure, to prevent Veiler from stopping Rabbits. I quickly decided against it because this card does nothing against Inzektors and Heroes. That's when I thought of maining 3 Macro Cosmos instead, and these reasons explain why:

1. Macro is super effective against the following decks:

Inzektors
Heroes
Wind-Ups
Dark Worlds
Dragons

Not to mention there are quite a few others...

2. No hand traps will work. Veiler and Maxx "C" are useless. Additionally, those players who will side into Electric Virus, to steal my Dolkka, Laggia, Leviathan Dragon or Zenmaines, will be unable to use the Virus for that purpose.

3. Macro can bait out Warnings. I won a game on Dueling Network today because someone used Warning on my Macro, and then I pulled a Rabbit out of my hat...

4. In GAOV, we are getting Night Beam. Some players may choose to run many copies of this card. Funny thing is Night Beam only destroys face-down backrow. If Macro is face-up, Night Beam won't beat it.

5. Macro makes my Leviair a lot better...

Anyway, maining 3 copies of Macro is just an experiment. Who knows, tomorrow I may move Macro back to my side deck, but you never know.

No More Priority

The title explains it all: Priority is finally gone. This is all over the Internet now, so writing about in great detail is unnecessary.

Rabbit and Wind-Up decks get a little weaker. Dragons particular REDMD and the new dragons from GAOV do get hurt by this slightly. Veiler is going to increase in price now, because it slightly got better. You can use Bottomless Trap Hole on other cards like Zenmaity, Judgment Dragon, BLD, and there effects will not get a chance to activate.

This is short post. Basically Veiler, Bottomless Trap Hole and Raigeki Break will see more play in the main deck now. I wonder how this ruling will impact YCS Chicago? How will the lack of priority affect my deck-building strategies? Only time will tell...

Card Games...

The luck factor of this game has recently disgusted me quite thoroughly. These thoughts of manifested at the conclusion of Regionals in Montreal. If you read my previous post, more than half the games I lost (if not all of them) were caused from my lack of luck. I think anyone can agree with this.

I enjoy playing Dino Rabits quite a bit. The deck is quite skill-based, despite what other may think, because you can still be victorious, regardless of opening Rabbit or not, if you effectively outplay your opponent. The deck does have quite the sack-factor though. First-turn Rabbit is one of the strongest openings in the current metagame. If you open Rabbit and many backrows, and/or Tour Guide, your chances of auto-winning have increased, but haven't necessarily reached 100% victory rate.

After the Regionals, I strongly considered quitting the game, because I was very unlucky all day long, and I don't want to be placed into this situation again. However, I decided to suck it up and continue playing card games, for now. There is a Regionals in Toronto coming up soon, and my goal is to top this one. Depending on what happens at this Regionals, it will determine whether I quit or not. I will be taking Dino Rabbits to Regionals, despite my horrible performance in Montreal, because I feel it is the best deck currently. I need to make my decklist stronger, though, and this is what I have to change.

+2 Forbidden Chalice

I was supposed to borrow 2 for the event, but that instance failed to occur. I lost my mirror match because he had a Forbidden Chalice at a critical moment, and if it wasn't for that, I probably would've won the match. The card is really good for dealing with Laggia, Dolkka, Tour Guide, Zenmaity, Inzektors... When I play at the next Regionals, 2 of them will be in my main deck somehow.

+1-3 Card Car "D"

Depending on how many I acquire before Regionals, I may want to include them in my deck. My opinion of this card, for this deck, is still unknown. Knowing my luck, I would have a tendancy to draw my normal dinosaurs first. I'm not huge on it for this deck, but only testing will reveal the truth.

+1-3 Night Beam

Another card from GAOV. If I get them I will probably run them. This card is retarded. For those who doesn't know what this card does: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Night_Beam

+1-2 Dimensional Slice

Yet another new card. It's not a broken card, but I find it really amusing: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Dimension_Slice

+1 Maestroke the Symphonic Djinn

This is the new Rank 4 monster that was released in the most recent starter deck. It's a little weak, but the card has some pretty nifty effects: http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Maestroke_the_Symphony_Djinn

I will do my best to incorporate these changes in the deck. Some of these cards may make the difference between topping in Toronto or not. Let the playtesting begin.

Regionals Report 04/21/2012

Today I ended up booking off work and played in a Regionals in Montreal, hoping to get a Nationals invite. I ended up playing Dino-Rabbit.

Round 1 vs Dino-Rabbit (2-1)

1 – I summoned Kabazauls and set a card. He played Smashing Ground, summoned Guaiba and attacked. I flipped it with Book of Mooon. He set 1 card before passing. I summoned my Guaiba and attacked into Book of Moon. I ended after I set a trap. He flipped up his Guaiba, and I negated its effect with Veiler before the Battle Phase. He summoned Sabersaurus, attacked my Guaiba with his Guaiba, and I took a direct blow from Sabersaurus. I used Warning on his Laggia during Main Phase 2 and he passed. I summoned Kabazauls and attacked him directly. He summoned Tour Guide, and I used my other Veiler on it. He set a trap before passing. I used Heavy Storm on his trap and summoned another Guaiba. I destroyed his Tour Guide with it, summoning another Guaiba, and attacked him directly with Kabazauls. I made Laggia with my 2 Guaiba afterward and he scooped when he drew for his turn.
2 – He summoned Rabbit, then 2 Kabazauls, then Laggia. He set the rest of his hand afterward. I set 3 traps and ended my turn. My opponent flipped 3 MST… He topped Tour Guide and I scooped.
3 – I don’t remember the contents of this game exactly. All I remember is that I had a traps for all of his monsters. I won the game by summoning Leviair, stealing his Rabbit and making my own Laggia.

(Apparently he was one of Montreal’s better players. It is a shame I couldn’t remember his name.)

Round 2 vs Inzektors (2-0)

1 – I summoned Rabbit and made Laggia immediately and passed. He set 2 backrows and passed. I blew up his Book of Moon with MST, then summoned Tour Guide, then Sangan, then Leviair, then Rabbit, then 2 Sabersaurus… I attacked directly and inflicted 8000 that turn.

(I had no idea hat he as playing. I made it look like I side-decked, but I didn’t.)

2 – He played Duality and grabbed a Hornet. He set a monster, and a trap. I drew, destroyed his trap with MST and summoned Guaiba. I destroyed his Hornet, summoned another Guaiba, and made a Laggia. I set 2 backrows and ended. Somehow he killed my Laggia that turn. However next turn I summoned Tour Guide and summoned Sangan. I used Monster Reborn on his Hornet and beat him down with Zenmaines and Sangan for a while. He stalled out for a bit, but I eventually drew my Smashing Grounds and they opened up direct attacks for me.

Round 3 vs Dino-Rabbit (1-2)

1 – It finally happened. My opening 6 cards were 3 Sabersaurus and 3 Kabazauls…
2 – I opened with 3 normal monsters this time. However I had both my Warnings for both of his Rabbits, therefore I won.
3 – This game went back and forth for a long time. I opened 2 Kabazauls and 2 Sabersaurus, along with 2 Warning. This time he eventually broke through my defenses and we entered a top-decking war, where it was literally anyone’s game, and luck would play the key. He top-decked a Avarice, and off that drew a monster and Heavy Storm. Yep…

Round 4 vs Inzektors (2-0)

1 – I summoned a Sabersaurus and a few traps. He used Duality and added Hornet to hand. He summoned Centipede, and stopped his effect with Fiendish Chain. He set some backrow and ended. I summoned my Guaiba and performed Guaiba into Laggia plays. He couldn’t recover from that.
2 – I controlled him the entire game with 1 Sabersaurus, 2 Kabazauls, 2 Macro Cosmos and 1 Solemn Judgment. Yeah.

Round 5 vs Six Samurai (0-2)

(This player wasn’t even good, he just opened lucky.)

1 – I set a Sangan, along with one useless backrow for what was about to happen (I think it was a Forbidden Lance). He played Gateway and exploded.
2 – I opened 3 Kabazauls, 2 Sabersaurus and a Fiendish Chain. I summoned the Sabersaurus and set the Chain. He played United, special summoned Elder, and normal summoned Kageki; which I had to use my chain on. He drew 2 cards: Gateway and Ascetism. He exploded and on my turn I drew Rabbit, and that was game.

Round 6 vs Inzektors (2-0)

This match followed the same pattern that the other ones did. I actually drew Rabbit both games during his match, which as kinda unusual…

Round 7 vs Bubble-Beat Heroes (2-0)

1 – I opened with Rabbit, made a Laggia, and set some backrows. I had the Veiler for his Stratos, and he set some backrows as well. I summoned Sabersaurus and started to beat him down. The game ended a few turns later because he didn’t draw any other monsters…
2 – In order to avoid Super Polymerizations, I took most of his life points with Tour Guide and Sangan. I had answers for all of his plays, and that was that.

So my record was X-2, which is good I guess, considering a bunch of players with a score of X-2 would come in Top 16 and get an invite. I came 18th… Yeah. In the end, my consistent stream of bad luck never disappeared. The end.

SkillOverLuck Tournament Summary for the Week

Hooray, I was able to attend a Friday tournament today, and I played Dino Rabbit again. Yeah...

Round 1 vs Frog Fairies (2-0)

1 - I never drew a Rabbit this game, but we went back and forth for awhile. I kept killing Kristyas but they kept coming back... BLS put in a lot of work but he banished it with his BLS. I think I used Dark Hole afterward, and the he drew shitty the rest of the game so I won.
2 - He drew shitty the entire game so I just beat him down with Sabersaurus.

Round 2 vs Inzektors (2-1)

1 - We went back and forth for a while, but I failed to draw any Tour Guides or Rabbits. I also had a dead BLS all game long with no real defense...
2 - I don't know how I won, but i did...
3 - He passed turn one. I went and set a Sangan and a Fiendish Chain. He MST'd my Chain and exploded. Fortunately I had Maxx "C" and I drew 5 extra cards, including Gorz, and searched for Rabbit with Sangan. Next turn he used Judgment on my Heavy Storm, and I made a Laggia and almost killed him. He didn't have any more answers so I won.

Round 3 vs Inzektors (2-1)

1 - He killed all my Thunder Kings with Troopers, gaining a lot of advantage. Again I didn't draw Tour Guides or Rabbits, and he eventually destroyed me with Inzektor plays.
2 - I had a defense for everything he did that game, so he couldn't do much.
3 - This game went back and forth. I had Macro Cosmos thought, and shut down one of is Card Trooper plays, and he wasn't able to remove it the entire game. Eventually I reduced him to having one card in hand, and no cards on field. I randomly drew a Rabbit finally, summoned Dolkka in case he had Gorz, and attacked him directly for 2 turns. He drew a Dark Hole and wiped it. Then I stated drawing random monster removal and he drew monsters that all died. Eventually he had a Centipede and I had no monster removal for the summon. I drew a Guiaba with an already set Forbidden Lance set. I won very quickly after that.

Top 4 was myself, Raymond (Inzektors), Machina player and the Inzektor player I just defeated.

Round 4 vs Machina Gadgets

1 - I went first and FINALLY drew and summoned Rabbit first turn. I made a Laggia and set a couple traps. He went, used Foolish Burial on a Jinzo. Then he summoned Gearframe to search Fortress. Laggia negated the summon of Fortress and he set two cards. I can't remember what happened next but I did win a few turns later because he couldn't do anything.
2 - He went and did some stuff. I summoned Rabbit and made Laggia. He forced Laggia's negation with Smashing Ground then bounced it back with Grand Mole. Eventually I made a Chimeratech Fortress Dragon, killed his Mole, then I won.

I split with Raymond for first and second. Happy to go undefeated two Fridays in a row with Rabbit. I'll be going to Regionals and be playing this deck.

***Saturday***

I was working, but Michael played Inzektors at our Locals and went 2-2 due to bad hands. Raymond played Inzektors at a box tournament and placed 3rd, which is cool.
