Advanced Analysis of YCS Leipzig

A few days ago YCS Leipzig occured, and was the final YCS of the format. Indeed it has some very interesting results. The European writing team that Konami has did an excellent job recording feature matches, statistics, and the top 16 decklists. This was the top 16:

10 Dino Rabbit decks
4 Inzektor decks
2 Wind Up decks

These statistics clearly show what will be dominating at the start of the upcoming format, since none of the major cards in any of these decks are being restricted in any way. Now, I'm going to go through some of the decklists I thought were interesting.

1st Place: Stephan Sluis (Dino Rabbit)

Monsters: 21

3 Rescue Rabbit
3 Tour Guide From the Underworld
3 Jurrac Guaiba
3 Kabazauls
3 Sabersaurus
3 Maxx "C"
1 Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
1 Sangan
1 Effect Veiler

Spells: 11

3 Mystical Space Typhoon
2 Forbidden Lance
1 Dark Hole
1 Heavy Storm
1 Book of Moon
1 Mind Control
1 Pot of Avarice
1 Monster Reborn

Traps: 9

2 Solemn Warning
2 Fiendish Chain
1 Solemn Judgment
1 Torrential Tribute
1 Mirror Force
1 Trap Dustshoot
1 Starlight Road

Extra Deck: 15

3 Evolzar Laggia
2 Evolzar Dolkka
1 Number 39: Utopia
1 Number C39: Utopia Ray
1 Wind-Up Zenmaines

1 Number 20: Giga-Brilliant
1 Leviair the Sea Dragon
1 Wind-Up Zenmaister
1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Stardust Dragon
1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
Side Deck: 15

3 Macro Cosmos
2 Cyber Dragon
2 Snowman Eater
2 Thunder King Rai-Oh
2 Royal Decree
2 Dimensional Prison
1 Spirit Reaper
1 Smashing Ground

This deck seems like the standard Dino Rabbit template that people will follow for the most part, with some minor changes of course. The deck seemed to be able to handle anything. I read this guy's tournament report and he went into detail about particular things. First, he emphasized that he only played one Wind-Up deck the entire tournament, and played a bunch of Rabbit decks. He seemed to have the best deck, or drew better... Whatever the case, this is second recent YCS win in Europe so obviously he knows what he is doing.

2nd Place: Fabian Renner (Inzektor)

Monsters: 21

3 Tour Guide From the Underworld
3 Inzektor Hornet
3 Inzektor Dragonfly
3 Inzektor Centipede
3 Maxx "C"
2 Spirit Reaper
1 Sangan
1 Dark Armed Dragon
1 Gorz the Emissary of Darkness
1 Inzektor Giga-Mantis

Spells: 11

3 Mystical Space Typhoon
2 Pot of Duality
1 Heavy Storm
1 Dark Hole
1 Monster Reborn
1 Book of Moon
1 Foolish Burial
1 Allure of Darkness

Traps: 8

2 Solemn Warning
2 Fiendish Chain
1 Solemn Judgment
1 Call of the Haunted
1 Mirror Force
1 Torrential Tribute

Extra Deck: 15

1 Armory Arm
1 Ally of Justice Catastor
1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Ancient Fairy Dragon
1 Stardust Dragon
1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
2 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
2 Wind-Up Zenmaines
1 Number 39: Utopia
2 Leviair the Sea Dragon
1 Number 20: Giga-Brilliant
1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon

Side Deck: 15

2 Royal Decree
2 Gozen Match
2 Thunder King Rai-Oh
2 Effect Veiler
1 Smashing Ground
2 Forbidden Lance
3 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
1 Dimensional Prison

I like this decklist for a few reasons. Firstly, he plays Tour Guides, which I have strongly considered for this deck. Secondly, double Spirit Reaper is smart. It helps prevent swarms from Wind-Ups and Rabbit, although it is a little weaker in the mirror match. However, Spirit Reaper is another one of my favourable ideas about this. Finally, he sided Forbidden Lance, which is something I personally considered including in the main deck. The card seems to have potential in the deck, which makes me happy. I like Forbidden Lance.

3rd place: Konrad Grünewald (Inzektor)

Monsters: 22

3 Inzektor Dragonfly
3 Inzektor Centipede
3 Inzektor Hornet
1 Inzektor Giga-Mantis
3 Tour Guide From the Underworld
1 Sangan
2 Maxx "C"
3 Effect Veiler
1 Dark Armed Dragon
1 Mystic Tomato
1 Black Luster Soldier – Envoy of the Beginning

Spells: 10

1 Pot of Duality
3 Mystical Space Typhoon
1 Dark Hole
1 Monster Reborn
1 Foolish Burial
1 Allure of Darkness
1 Book of Moon
1 Heavy Storm

Traps: 8

2 Fiendish Chain
2 Solemn Warning
2 Call of the Haunted
1 Solemn Judgment
1 Torrential Tribute

Extra Deck: 15

1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon
1 Armory Arm
1 Ally of Justice Catastor
1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Black Rose Dragon
1 Scrap Dragon
1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Number 39: Utopia
1 Number C39: Utopia Ray
1 Wind-Up Zenmaines
2 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
2 Leviair the Sea Dragon
1 Number 20: Giga-Brilliant

Side Deck: 15

3 Royal Decree
3 Gozen Match
2 Spirit Reaper
3 Smashing Ground
2 Ryko, Lightsworn Hunter
2 Chain Disappearance

This is my favourite Inzektor deck in the entire Top 16 because it is only a few cards different of how I would play the deck. I would personally swapped the amount of Veilers and Maxx "C", possibly added Tour Bus, and a Dustshoot (of course that won't be happening starting Thursday).

4th place: Ioannis Mourelatos (Inzektor)

Monsters: 19

1 Dark Armed Dragon
3 Inzektor Centipede
3 Inzektor Dragonfly
3 Inzektor Hopper
3 Inzektor Hornet
2 Effect Veiler
1 Inzektor Giga-Mantis
2 Maxx "C"

1 Torrential Tribute
1 Trap Dustshoot
2 Solemn Warning

Extra Deck: 15

2 Wind-Up Zenmaines
2 Leviair the Sea Dragon
1 Number 20: Giga-Brilliant
1 Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
1 Number 39: Utopia
1 Number C39: Utopia Ray
1 Armory Arm
1 Ally of Justice Catastor
1 Brionac, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Black Rose Dragon
1 Scrap Dragon
1 Trishula, Dragon of the Ice Barrier
1 Chimeratech Fortress Dragon

Side Deck: 15

1 Cyber Dragon
3 Thunder King Rai-Oh
1 Effect Veiler
2 D.D. Crow
2 Snowman Eater
2 Dimensional Prison
2 Deck Devastation Virus
2 Royal Decree

This deck... he is the first person that seems to have made Hopper and Zektkaliber good. I'm not gonna lie I kinda want to try it...

Anyway, these are my favourite decks of the YCS Top 16. Yes, I realize they are the Top 4 decks, however, I really like them for reasons other than because they make the Top 4. To be honest, I wasn't really a fan of any of the Wind-Up builds. I have the deck myself and I'm struggling to come up with the best possible build. Anyway, here are some of my other thoughts:

42 Maxx "C"s were played in the Top 16 main decks, where the possible maximum able to be played was 48. It seems people are recognizing that Maxx "C" is a staple this format: Most people played 3 of this card, and now the price will increased. Makes me a little happy I stocked up on spares at Regionals, and I think I will be selling all the spare ones shortly... before it has a chance to be reprinted... probably in May...

I liked how the results of this YCS differed from Atlanta. In Atlanta, Wind-Ups shined a lot more than Inzektors and in Leipzig it was the complete opposite. Still, Dino Rabbit dominated the top tables, so right now it seems to be the best of the three decks.

Those are my thoughts about this YCS. This current format is about to end, and this YCS definitely showed how the next format is going to start. Should be a blast...

Regionals Report 2/26/2012

I really didn't feel like writing this, but I'm bored, so I'm writing about it. I went to Regionals with T.G. Stun because I was confident and comfortable using this deck. I put a lot of hard work and practice into the deck and I felt ready to top. So here is what happened on Sunday:

Round 1 vs Gallis Agents (2-1)

1 - He went first and set a monster and passed. I summoned Wanghu and attacked his face down Merchant, milling a Kristya, a Veiler and a Sangan, and added Monster Reborn to his hand. I didn't draw any traps on my first turn, but I played Shard of Greed and passed, knowing I was about to be screwed. He drew for his turn, special summoned BLS from his hand and Kristya using Monster Reborn. I didn't draw any traps next turn so I lost.
2 - I went and summoned Tengu and set four traps and passed. He set a monster and ended, then I chained Skill Drain. I went, summoned another Tengu, attacked his face down ryko, and I attacked directly with the other one. He summoned Gorz, but I had the Warning to stop it. I set another trap and ended. He went and set another monster. I drew T.G. Striker, summoned and synchro summoned Gaia Knight with Tengu, and I summoned the third Tengu. I attacked his set Merchant with a Tengu, then attacked him directly with my other monsters. He drew for his turn and scooped.
3 - He drew to 6 cards and passed without a play. I drew, and attacked him directly with the T.G. Warwolf I summoned that turn, and he summoned Gorz. I set 2 traps and ended. On his turn, he switched his Gorz to attack mode and attacked my Warwolf. I flipped 2 Horn of the Phantom Beast, destroyed Gorz, inflicted 100 damage and I drew 2 cards. He ended his turn at that. I drew, played Monster Reborn on his Gorz and normal summoned Tengu. I attacked the Kaien token with Tengu, and attacked him directly with Gorz and Warwolf, then ended. He drew and scooped revealing his hand: BLS, DAD, 2 Cyber Dragon, Hyperion, Dark Hole and Pot of Avarice.

As you can tell I wrote notes for most of my matches. This one went particularly fast, and I was feeling pretty good. Then as soon as Round 2 began, my stomach shrunk a little since I found out I was able to play Bo Tang.

Round 2 vs Six Samurai (2-1)

1 - I summoned Wanghu, set 3 backrow and ended. He went, used MST on my face down Fiendish Chain. He played Six Sam United, normal summoned Enishi and special summoned Kizan. He drew two cards with United. He attacked with Kizan and I activated Horn on my Wanghu. He took 700 and I drew a card. He set 3 cards and ended. I drew, and attacked with Wanghu into his Fiendish Chain. Then I summoned Striker and synchro summoned a Barkion. He activate Warning, but I activated Dark Bribe in response. Unfortunately this match took a long time, and it was really exciting, so I didn't take a lot of notes. After 12 turns we were both udner 2000 life points, and I eventually won by drawing a Rush Rhino and a Horn off of a Shard of Greed, and beating him down with it.
2 - He summoned a Barkion by Turn 2, and I didn't have a Skill Drain or a Warning for defensive purposes, so I lost rather quickly.
3 - Another really long game. I had Skill Drain active the enitre game too. He eventually summoned a Utopia which I was unable to get over for quite a few turns, until I drew one of my Strikers, and did a synchro play, summoned Gaia Knight, with another Tengu summoned, and a T.G. Warwolf with Horn of the Phantom Beast, and then I won.

I really enjoyed that match. It was honestly my favorite match of the entire format. After feeling awesome, Round 3 happened...

Round 3 vs Wind-Ups (0-2)

1 - He opened Tour Guide, Monster Reborn and Pot of Avarice, and I didn't open Maxx "C"...
2 - I set 4 traps and an MST and ended, since I went first. The other card in my hand was a Cyber Dragon. He went, set 2 cards and ended. I drew into another trap and passed. He chained Royal Decree at the end phase, and I destroyed it with MST, but he chained another Decree. He went and exploded with Tour Guide, Reborn, Avarice and Wind-Up Factory, discarding the 2 cards in my hand, and then I lost on my next turn... to a BLS.

So just like that, my record is 2-1. I got upset. Now Round 4:

Round 4 vs Wind-Ups (2-0)

1 - I went first, set a bunch of traps, summoned Tengu and ended. He went and passed. I summoned a Rhino, and attacked him directly with both of my monsters, inflicting 3700 damage. I set another trap and ended. He set a monster and ended. I went, summoned Striker and synchro summoned Brionac with Tengu, and summoned a second Tengu. I used Brionac, discarding my third Tengu from hand to bounce his set monster. He chained Veiler but I chained Book of Moon to force the effect through. I attacked directly with Tengu and Rhino again, only this time I equipped a Horn to my Rhino to attack for game.
2 - He went and activated Dimensional Fissure, but I chained Maxx "C". He set another backrow and ended. I summoned a Tengu and attacked directly. He went and tried to explode that turn but I had the traps to stop him. I won by beating him down after a few turns.

After that, I felt a little more confident going into Round 5, which was good.

Round 5 vs Inzektors (1-2)

1 - I had the traps to stop him from doing anything, and I was able to beat him down with many monsters over a few turns and won.
2 - This was where everything went downhill for me. I summoned a Barkion a few turns in, and I had a couple traps to back me up as well. He activated Decree, and I misplayed. For some reason I didn't negate it, so I lost to exploding Inzektor plays.
3 - I just didn't have the traps to stop his exploding plays so I lost. I can't remember but I might have summoned a BLS...

So that one misplay cost me everything. Moving on...

Round 6 vs Inzektors (2-1)

1 - This was the same as the last game I had, almost card for card actually... only this time I lost to BLS.
2 - I opened triple Skill Drain, Starlight Road, and 2 monsters. He tried to use Heavy Storm, but I had Starlight Road... so I won.
3 - This game went back and forth. I wasn't in the mood to record the details, but he couldn't do much with Macro Cosmos on my field...

So now I'm 4-2. In order to top, I would have to win all my matches from this point on. Lots of pressure...

Round 7 vs Wind-Ups (1-2)

1 - I didn't go first. He tried to explode but I had Maxx "C", so he didn't do much. I went and set up everything for his offense. I eventually won by wearing down his resources to almost nothing.
2 - He exploded first turn and I didn't have Maxx "C"...
3 - I drew triple Skill Drain, but I didn't draw any traps to stop his monster's summons or attacks, and I drew very little monsters the entire game, and he had an answer for all of them. I lost to BLS.

So yeah, I'm 4-3, with no chance of topping. Wonderful... I played round 8, even though I stopped caring.

Round 8 vs Dino Rabbit (2-0)

1 - He went first, summoned and activated Rabbit. I activated Maxx "C" in response. He summoned 2 Kabazauls and exceed summoned Laggia. I drew 2 cards from all of that, and he set 2 backrow to end his turn. I summoned Tengu, set 3 backrow and ended. He activated MST at the end phase, destroying my Starlight Road. He summoned Tour Guide and summoned another one. He exceed summoned Leviair, and used its effect to summon his banished Rabbit. He tributed the Rabbit to summon two Sabersaurus, and made a Dolkka. His Laggia attacked my Tengu. I activated Fiendish Chain but he negated it with Laggia. I then activated Horn. I destroyed his Laggia, inflicted 100 damage and drew 1 card. He ended his turn at that. I drew, attacked his Dolkka and killed it, drawing another card and inflicting a little more damage. I set more traps and a Warwolf. He drew, summoned a Sabersaurus and used Leviair to summon his Rabbit. He decided to overlay for a Utopia, which I bounced back to his extra deck with Complusory Evacuation Device. He decided to scoop.
2 - He summoned a Kabazauls and set the rest of his hand. I summoned a Rhino and used Warning to kill it. I set 4 backrow and ended. He drew, activated Dimensional Fissure and attacked me directly. I chained MST at the end phase to destroy his Fissure. I drew, and special summoned Striker. I normal summoned Tengu and he killed it with another Warning. I activated my set Monster Reborn to summon my Tengu back, but he activated Solemn Judgment in response. I activated Dark Bribe to counter it. Afterward, he chained Maxx "C" before I went for my synchro summon. I went ahead anyway, summoning Gaia Knight and another Tengu, while he drew two cards. I attcked his dinosaur with Gaia Knight, but he activated Mirror Force. I stopped it with my Solemn Judgement. I killed the dinosaur and attacked for game with Tengu.

That was it. I came 39th with a 5-3 record. Maybe I'm really hard on myself but I am quite disappointed, especially with my misplay in round 5. I wanted to top: That was my goal, and I failed miserably. Wind-Ups are ridiculous, and so is BLS. I'm not sure what to do at this point. Honestly, I'm really not in the mood for Yu-Gi-Oh at this point. The format ended, along with my goal for Regionals. On the weekend there is a box tournament. I don't want to play at this tournament though, because of the risk of disappointing myself again. Maybe that will change during the week, but that's up in the air.

Tournament Report 2/25/2012

Today I participated in the last Local tournament of the fomat. I played T.G. Stun because I really want to play this at Regionals tomorrow. This tournament was Regionals practice for a bunch of the players who participated today. Anyway, onto the report:

Round 1 vs Wind-Ups (2-0)

1 - Even though I misplayed a little I still gained a lot of advantage with Horn of the Phantom Beast. Skill Drain also helped...
2 - I opened a little bit bad, however I eventually gained advantage with Horns. I didn't misplay during this game. King Tiger helped me a lot, and I had my special teched Black Horn of Heavens to stop all his big exceed monsters.

Round 2 vs Zombies (2-0)

This guy is a complete idiot by the way...

1 - He went first, set a bunch of cards. I go and he activates Dustshoot to return Tengu to my deck over Wanghu. I spent the whole game beating him down with Wanghu and Horn... I kept control the entire game.
2 - He didn't do anything special. I had answers for everything he did... and he is just a bad player...

Round 3 vs Junk Doppel (2-1)

1 - I opened with Dustshoot to return the only playable card he had, considering I also opened with Wanghu... From there I kept control with Wanghu and traps and eventually. Having access to all 3 Horns also helps.
2 - The game took a while. I misplayed and that cost me the game because I forgot you couldn't use Thunder King to negate a special summon while Skill Drain is active, so I lost.
3 - I had answers for everything. I gained too much advantage for him to deal with. Warnings, Fiendish Chains and Maxx "C" won me this particular game.

Round 4 vs Malefic Geartown (2-1)

1 - I had answers for all of his big monsters and I beat him down with my smaller monsters. He didn't have any answers to my attacks.
2 - I opened with probably the worst hand of the day, and I lost because I misplayed slightly with Tengu.
3 - I used Dustshoot to return his only monster to his deck, and he didn't draw any other monsters that game so I won.

Top 4 at this point consisted of myself, an Inzektor player, and my round 1 and 3 opponents. We decided to split right away, and I was fine with that. Going undefeated the last Locals of the format was my main goal for today. I'm confident I will be taking T.G. Stun to Regionals tomorrow.

Tech Genus Tech

By now, everyone should know that T.G. Stun won YCS Atlanta. The week before this event started, I was thinking about playing it for Regionals. So I put a build together and played it at a double box tournament on the weekend, and I went undefeated. 1 Nobleman of Extermination

Both of these decklists are really strange. They made me look back and forth between my deck and these two decks. These are all the thoughts that have come to mind:

1. Lack of Maxx "C"

This is on my mind the most. There is only one Maxx "C" in both of these decklists. It is something that boggles my mind. 3 Maxx "C" is consistent, and it helped me win a lot of games on the weekend. Not to mention if you are playing Wind-Ups, they go first and explode, you probably lose if you don't have Maxx "C" or Veiler. I can understand them not playing Veiler; Skill Drain is a good card. But Maxx "C"...

2. Shard of Greed?

Right now my opinion of this card is all over the place. I like it, but it's a bad card. It just sits around for two turns. If it goes off, awesome. However sometimes if Shard of Greed could take the place of any trap in my deck, my success rate could be higher. The winner didn't play any, and the other guy only played two. To be honest, I was kinda considering playing only 2 of them, before I saw these decklists. Now my idea seems a little more solid.

3. Pot of Avarice

Both players in top 32 played this card. I've tried to stay away from it because it can be a dead card in your opening hand, and for a long time. Maybe i'll try it out now.

4. King Tiger Wanghu

The winner didn't play them at all but the other player did. I don't see why he wouldn't. It stops Inzektors and Wind-Ups, unless Skill Drain is active, and in that case it probably doesn't matter either way. With Horn equipped to Wanghu, it becomes 2500, which is really good. The winner played Barbaros instead, probably because it's a great attacker. But Wanghu addresses the meta a little more. I do want to kinda try importing Barbaros, but deck space is tight.

5. TG1-EM1

Both players in top 32 had a playset of this card. It is a really good card, and again, I do want to try and find space for 2. Deck space is an issue though...

6. Other standard traps

These top players played Mirror Force, Dimensional Prison and Bottomless Trap Hole. I want to try these cards somehow, but deck space is tight, and I'm strongly considering Black Horn of Heaven...

These are my main thoughts when comparing all 3 decklists. I'm putting a lot of time in this deck because I really want to play it at Regionals. Please leave good comments with any suggestions and advice that can potentially make this deck better.

Analysis of YCS Atlanta

YCS Atlanta has just concluded and the winning deck was T.G. Stun. Honestly, I am quite pleased with this result, since I decided 4 days ago that I want to play this deck at regionals next week. The deck seems to be a really great pick to counter the current meta. However, the choices in his deck intrigue me. After reading the feature matches, it's apparent the winner played multiple cards that I didn't play. I do want to see the actual decklist of the winner.

Anyway, these were the decks that made the Top 32:

15 Dino Rabbit
9 Wind-Ups
2 T.G. Stun
2 Inzektor
1 Chaos Agents
1 Dark World
1 Evolsaurs
1 Empty Jar

Dino Rabbit swarmed the Top 32. This is unsurprising though, because Rabbit and Tour Guide are capable of amazing things. Laggia, Dollka, Leviair and Zenmaines are examples of these amazing things.

Wind-Ups followed with 9 showings in Top 32. This is also very unsurprising because Wind-Ups are capable of depleting the majority of your opponents hand, if Veiler and Maxx "C" don't interfere, first turn. Very little can emerge from the dominating combo.

What is really surprising is that Inzektors only took up 2 spots in the Top 32, and failed to break Top 16. Dino Rabbit does have a good match-up against this deck, and Wind-Ups can cripple the deck with its devastating first turn combo. Maybe it was just bad luck, because this deck shouldn't have done that bad.

Agents are still a solid deck obviously, and Dark World clearly got a little better with new cards from Order of Chaos. Empty Jar probably took advantage of One Day of Peace. Evolsaurs is just a little random, and I'm not sure what to think.

So this was the last YCS of the format. There are still a few more regionals left, and the results of this YCS will definitely have some impact over what happens the next 10 days.

My Thoughts on the Official March 2012 Banlist

The official banlist in the OCG has been released. This means the TCG will get their list very soon, even though it will likely be an exact duplicate of the OCG list. The list is posted below, and I will explain my thoughts about each card.

Call of the Haunted

*********************************************
First of all, the removal of Bulb and Spore is terribly upsetting. The Plant engine has been my favorite since Quickdraw Dandywarrior. This engine has now been crippled... I will despise Konami forever.

Removing Trishula was a good call in my opinion. It's one of the most dangerous staple synchro monsters in the game.

Reomving Dustshoot is one of the better things about this list. Dustshoot revealed too much information and potentially breaks hands whenever activated, especially first-turn.

Limiting Striker and Earth isn't terrible. Their respective decks are still viable options for next format. It just gives two extra spaces for tech.

Level Limit Area B and Marshmallon at 2 give stall decks a little bit of a push. Marshmallon in particular can assist Chain Burn, while exceed monsters can still attack under level Limit...

Lumina to 2 will give Lightsworns a little push. The deck definitely becomes a little bit, but it's still a luck-based deck for the most part.

Teleport to 2 is a curious choice, a choice that I kinda like. I already have some deck ideas because of this...

Smoke Signal to 2 is kinda stupid. Samurais have just become popular again in Mexico, and at some Regionals. Now the deck becomes tier 1 again or very close to that.

Tengu 2 is a good choice, because it's a retarded floater. I probably won't be playing Tengu at 2.

Ultimate Offering at 2 is another good call. Offering Gadgets is a crazy deck in the OCG, and putting Offering to 2 will calm it a little. It's definitely still playable.

Torrential to 2 is very strange. Most scary cards like this, along with Mirror Force, Dark Hole, and Heavy Storm are at 1 because they can destroy lots of cards. They are scary... Putting Torrential to 2 will cause players to be a little more careful, which is good, but scary.

Finally, COTH to 3... It's hilarious. It will be played freqently, because 4 Monster Reborns, 3 of them being chainable, is really good. That is all...

This banlist is Konami's way of forcing players to play exceed monsters, since Rabbit, Wind-Ups and Inzektors didn't get hit at all. Konami wants to sell their newer products, so hitting a lot of good tuners will force some players to do this. Overall I don't like this list. In this upcoming format, for the most part, the best players will all be maining 2-3 Veiler, 2-3 Maxx "C", 2-3 Fiendish Chain, and 2 Torrential as staples. Looks like next format will be just as sacky as it is now. Enjoy...

Double Box Tournament Report 02/18/2012

Today I went to Peterborough, Ontario, to participate in a Double Box tournament. Five players from Belleville, including myself, participated in the event. First place would receive 24 packs, second place gets 16 packs and third place wins 8 packs. Every player received one pack for entry. I decided to play T.G. Stun because I am seriously considering playing it at Regionals next week. Skill Drain is a broken card, Horn of the Phantom Beast is ridiculous, and King Tiger Wanghu stops a lot of the meta, when Skill Drain isn't active and Horn of the Phantom Beast is equipped to it.

Round 1 vs Lightsworn (2-1)

This player apparently is really good, as I was told. The match was interesting.

1 - By the end of the game, time was almost called. I kept having answers for everything he did, including a bunch of boss monsters, but neither of us could finish each other off. Triple Maxx "C" was very productive and useful. Eventually, he lost because he ran out of cards in his deck...
2 - Time was called very early during this game. He didn't drop any huge boss monsters, but in the end he had 500 life points more than me, and I couldn't finish him.
3 - We each had 2 turns this game, and whoever had the most life points in the end won the match. Thankfully, Tengu and Brionac provided me with enough defense and offense to win the match, since I only drew one trap and the rest were monsters...

Round 2 vs Chain Burn (2-0)

1 - This game, he almost burned me to death. Fortunately I had the Dark Bribe to stop his final trap, and that saved me.
2 - I sided into Trap Stun and I beat him. because of Trap Stun...

Round 3 vs Chaos Monarchs (2-1)

1 - He summoned Jinzo turn two and I didn't have Skill Drain face-up on the field. Fortunately, I topdecked a Book of Moon and used it to kill Jinzo with my Tengu. From there, Fiendish Chains and Skill Drains stopped his Monarchs from doing anything, so I killed him with Gaia Knight.
2 - He swarmed me and I didn't have enough traps.
3 - I went first, set a bunch of cards, summoned Rush Rhino and ended. He set a monster and ended. I flipped my sided-in Macro Cosmos. I swarmed him a little bit, and the Veiler in hand was dead because of Macro, so I summoned Trishula and won shortly after.

Round 4 vs Inzektors (2-0)

He was my newest teammate in Belleville, either way we would both make the Top 4 cut.

1 - Skill Drain shut him down, and it was a very slow game. Our life points were very similar the entire time, but I managed to summon T.G. Striker and Tengu very late game, made Brionac, summoned a Tengu from deck, and that finished him off.
2 - Skill Drain shut him down again, but this time he didn't have as many answers to my plays as last time.

3 Belleville players made Top 4, which is pretty good. The top 4 decks were T.G. Stun, Inzektors, Infernity and Gladiator Beasts.

Round 5 vs Gladiator Beasts (2-1)

1 - I started with 2 Dark Bribe, 2 Shard of Greed, 1 Rhino and 1 Dark Hole. I played everything first turn except the Hole. He didn't activate any spells or traps the first two turns... and he somehow summoned a Gyzarus, destroying both my Shards. He eventually summoned Heraklinos and there was nothing I could do.
2 - I had the answers for everything he did, and I gained a lot of advantage with Horn of the Phantom Beast.
3 - I had the one Skill Drain to stop all his plays. He barely had any spells or traps that game so I won.

After that I decided to split for 1st and 2nd with my new teammate, and together we won a lot of packs. Notable cards I obtained were Inzektor Hornet and Giga-Mantis, Wind-Up Rat, Shark and Zenmaioh, and other cards. I also did a fair amount of trading throughout the day, so today was very productive. Going undefeated with T.G. Stun was very assuring, and I really want to play it at Regionals. Anyway, tomorrow I will write about my thoughts on the March 2012 Banlist....

My Wishes for the March 2012 List

I hate that it's taken me this long to get around to writing this post. Anyway, I will post my ideal banlist for the March 2011 format, and then my explanations. I've done my research and I have put much deliberation into this list.

Banned:

BLS - You can topdeck this card and automatically win. Enough said.
Future Fusion - Super Foolish Burial, plus a monster. This card is crazy, especially with the new dragon support.
Sangan - This card can search a lot of good monsters, and is easily accessable.
Monster Reborn - This is another card that can automatically win games, or at least get you out of a sticky situation.
Heavy Storm - A good player can use this card exactly like Harpie's Feather Duster, and that card is banned for obvious reasons.
Dark Hole - A good player can use this card exactly like Raigeki, and that card is also banned for good reason.
Pot of Avarice - This card, in my opinion, is better than Pot of Greed.
Limiter Removal - This card wins games by itself.
Trap Dustshoot - This card reveals too much information and can break your opponent.

Limited:

Kristya - Hyperion is easier to deal with than this monster.
Venus - This card can set up all of your boss monsters in any Fairy deck.
Inzektor Dragonfly - This monster starts Inzektor comboes most of the time, and enables huge advantage.
Rescue Rabbit - This card can essentially let you summon any rank 4 or under Exceed monster that only requires two materials. As we get better Exceeds, this card becomes better.
Wind-Up Rat - This card is an excellent +1 for Wind-Ups. In my opinion, it is more dangerous than Zenmaity.
Goyo Guardian - If Goyo destroys an Exceed monster, and you summon that monster, it's not a big deal. This card can come back. This will also make Extra Deck creation a little harder.
One Day of Peace - Makes Exodia, Chain Burn, Final Countdown and Empty Jar significantly better. In fact, this card is the only reason I want to build the above four decks.

Semi-Limited:

Emergency Teleport - This card isn't as broken as it once was.
Book of Moon - This card has to come back to two to help balance this game.
Primal Seed - This card didn't see any play at 1. Maybe this card has to go to 2 to see some play, unless BLS gets banned. In that case, we should get to play 100 copies of this card.
Formula Synchron - As long as we don't get Fisborg back, this card isn't that dangerous.
Wind-Up Carrier Zenmaity - Summoning any Wind-Up from deck is pretty retarded

Unlimited:

Who gives a crap...

These are my thoughts and my ideal banlist. Please feel free to leave your comments.

Tournament Report 02/11/2012

Sorry it took me so long to write this. Anyway, I played Plant Synchro on saturday, now that I was able to include Tour Bus from the Underworld. It's a good card.

Round 1 vs Newbie Dragunities (2-0)

I beat him really fast...

Round 2 vs Inzektors (1-2)

1 - He beat me with normal Inzektor plays, and I got beat pretty quickly because I didn't have any responses. (On a sidenote, I realized a day later after asking someone that my opponent made an illegal play that could've changed the outcome of the game. Oh well.)
2 - I had answers for his plays so I won.
3 - I managed to stop all of his inzektor plays. Eventually, he played Allure of Darkness, and he drew and Summoned a BLS, and that killed me. BLS has to be banned...

Round 3 vs Newbie ???..... (2-0)

I beat him so fast that I didn't have enough time to figure out what deck he was playing...

Round 4 vs Lightsworns (2-0)

1 - I summoned a Trishula on my second turn and removed his Gorz in hand, Necro Gardna on the field, and random Lightsworn monster in the grave. He couldn't recover from that.
2 - I made a Trishula turn 2 again, after he played Charge and 2 Solar Recharge. Trishula and Tour Bus helped me keep 4 Lightsworn monsters out of the graveyard, and he couldn't get any more in the graveyard, so he couldn't summon the 3 Judgment Dragons he had in his hand...

Round 5 vs Blackwings (2-0)

1 - I exploded turn 2 and won.
2 - I had answers for everything he did, and I beat him to death with my Librarian. Tour Bus returned his Vayu to his deck which really helped.

So I squeezed into top 4, along with the Inzektor player, and 2 other Plant decks. We split for Top 4, and that was that.

Anyway, from this tournament, I've re-confirmed my thought that BLS has to be banned. Honestly, the card is retarded and overpowered. Also, I've thought of a deck idea that should handle the Tier 1 meta currently. I plan on testing it on Wednesday, as I have to decide soon what I'm going to play for Regionals on the 26th.

Tournament Report 02/08/2012

I decided to play in the Locals this evening with a crazy Wind-Up deck. This Wind-Up decks plays many level 3 monsters that special summon themselves, or other level 3 monsters. Examples include Tour Guide, Gilasaurus, T.G. Warwolf... along with the staple Wind-Up monsters. After playtesting 100 sample hands, 88 of them were able to perform the Zenmaity loop, assuming the opponent doesn't have any responses, which is pretty good. Anyway, the tournament consisted of 6 players total: 4 consistent toppers and 2 new players. The tournament was 3 rounds with no top 4.

Round 1 vs Hopeless Dragon (2-0)

1 - I went first and sent 4 cards from his hand to the graveyard. His turn didn't consist of anything special, and I won the turn after.
2 - He went first and summoned Koaki Meiru Drago. That screwed me for a few turns. I had Tour Guide in my hand, which had to go off to start the Zenmaity loop. If I played Koaki Meiru Doom, I could've done something. A few turns later I got it off the field, and then exploded. I won on my next turn after that.

Round 2 vs Inzektors (2-1)

1 -  I exploded and won shortly after, I think.
2 - He went first and had the defense to prevent me from doing much. He beat me.
3 - I didn't have the cards to Zenmaity loop first turn. On his turn he didn't do too much. I looped him second turn and had 2 MST for his 2 set traps: Fiendish Chain and Call of the Haunted. I discarded the remainder of his hand and attacked him directly with 3 Zenmaity, bringing him down to 3500. I also summoned a Zenmaines that turn. He topdecked into Dragonfly, and destroyed all my Zenmaity that turn, and summoned a Leviathan Dragon. On my next turn, I made a Giga-Brilliant somehow, and ppumped up itself along with Zenmaines. I attacked the Leviathan with Zenmaines, destroying one its materials, and at the end phase I destroyed Leviathan. He drew, summoned Card Trooper, milled 3 cards and attacked my Zenmaines. At the end phase I destroyed his one remaining trap. I topdecked into Tour Guide and won that turn.

Round 3 vs Psychics (2-0)

1 - I went first and discarded his entire hand because I opened really well. I won shortly after because he didn't have much of a response. Wind-Up Kitten won the game. Meow.
2 - He set a monster and 2 back row. I summoned Wind-Up Magician, and special summoned Shark from my hand. Magician's effect triggered and I summoned another Magician from the deck. I made Shark level 3 with its effect, and my other Magician triggered which let me summon another Shark from my deck. He chained Torrential to destroy my 4 monsters and his Serene Psychic Witch. His Witch removed from play Esper Girl, and it would be special summoned during his Standby Phase. I ended my turn and he drew. I chained Maxx "C" during his draw phase, since summoning Esper Girl was a mandatory effect. I drew 1 card. He summoned Silent Psychic Wizard, and banished his Witch with the Wizard's effect. H activated Duality and chose and set Mind Over Matter. He attacked me directly with Wizard and set one card. I drew and activated Pot of Avarice, attempting to bait his Mind Over Matter. He did negate it, and I summoned Tour Guide and exploded from there, removing his hand. I also summoned Wind-Up Kitten to bounce his Wizard, which in turn left his Witch permently banished. Meow. I won a few turns later.

I went undefeated with Wind-Ups which is kinda cool. The deck is really good and really consistent. It's a very fun deck as well. I might play it again at some point before the format changes.

Tournament Report 02/04/2012

Being interested in Gallis builds I decided to create my own build from scratch. It was a Gallis deck focused around Green Baboon and Behemoth the King of all Animals. For those who didn't know, Behemoth is a 7 star monster that adds a number of beast monsters from your grave to your hand equal to the number of tributes used for its tribute summon, and it has 2700 ATK. You can choose to tribute one monster for its tribute summon, but its attack becomes 2000. Anyway, main strategy of the deck: Tribute Summon Behemoth, add two Gallis to hand, and then continue to burn away your opponent with Gallis. The deck was really fun, and here is the report:

Round 1 vs Lightsworn (2-0)

Nothing too eventful. Every game I beat him by my third turn with a mixture of Gallis burn and lots of monsters following that burn..

Round 2 vs Lightsworn (2-0)

Almost the same as round 1...

Round 3 vs Fabled (1-2)

1 - He exploded 2 turn. I didn't draw any of my Veiler, Tragoedia, Gorz of Maxx "C", and I couldn't kill him on my first turn, so I lost.
2 - I controlled his explosion with 2 Cycle Readers, and then I could kill him with many monsters.
3 - Same as game 1. I couldn't kill him fast enough, and I didn't have enough defenses.

Round 4 vs Piper (2-0)

I don't remember what happened, but it was a really fun match. I won because I top-decked a Gallis, and then I exploded from there.

So top 4 consisted of myself, the Fabled player, a Quickdraw Player and a T.G. Agent player.

Round 5 vs T.G. Agents (0-2)

I am mega-pissed. I lost game 1 to a topdecked BLS and game 2 to a topdecked Kristya. It also didn't help that I didn't draw any Gallis, or anything to search it...

So yeah, after being horribly sacked I decided to split for 3rd and 4th. In other words I did a bad job. I don't think I will play Gallis anymore this format. It auto-loses to Kristya 90% of the time, and I play in a local infested with Agent decks and Kristyas... Oh well, I have many different decks I want to build, so it's time to move on from Gallis phase. But I will say this: The deck is fun.

Tournament Report 2/1/2012

So today I decided to play Gallis Machines. Basically, the only spells I ran were heavy storm, dark hole, overload fusion and limiter removal. The strategy is this: Get as many machines in the grave as possible (obviously including cyber dragons) to make a powerful fusion with overload fusion. Limiter just wins games on its own of course. I thought the deck was really cool. Anyway, on to the report:

Round 1 vs Psychics (1-2)

1 - I didn't draw any low level monster I could normal summon or set the entire time so I lost.
2 - I made some plays, and eventually broke him down with BLS, and a couple other big monsters.
3 - He had a Psychokinesis for every big monster I summoned, and I eventually ran out of monsters to summon.

Round 2 vs Fabled (2-0)

1 - He started exploding but I had Maxx "c" to draw many cards. He planned on looping me with brionac and two cerburrels. I eventually drew my Veilers 20 cards later and stopped the Brionac. When he couldn't explode anymore and realized he couldn't kill me that turn, he scooped.
2 - I had Maxx "C" again to draw many cards. I also disrupted some of his graveyard summons with D.D. Crow and Ally of Justice Cycle Reader. He scooped.

Round 3 vs T.G. Agents (2-1)

1 - I defeated him with standard Gallis plays, and I had the Veiler to stop the one Trishula he summoned.
2 - I held in for a while with a Zenmaines. Eventually, he summoned Kyperion and Kristya and broke through Zenmaines. I didn't have my Dark Hole so I lost.
3 - He didn't drop any boss monsters that game, and I had the Crows, Cycle Readers and Veilers to stop him from doing anything threatening. Eventually, I summoned a Cyber-End Dragon, and started to pierce through his Gachi. I won in a few turns because he couldn't deal with it.

I managed to scrape top 4, regardless of my first round defeat. The other players who advanced were the Fable player, a Six Samurai player and a Tour Guide Agent player.

Round 4 vs Tour Guide Agents (2-0)

1 - I beat him turn 2 with 2 Machine Fortress, one Gearframe, and Limiter Removal.
2 - This game was pretty similar to game 3 of the previous match. Instead of beating him with piercing damaged, I burned him to death with Decisive Armor.

Round 5 vs Fabled (2-0)

1 - He exploded and I drew many cards with Maxx "C". He would've beaten me if I didn't drop a very huge Tragoedia.
2 - I didn't have Maxx "C" this time. He exploded but couldn't finish me off. I recovered by making a Scrap Dragon and started to destroy his field slowly. Luckily, I had multiple Veilers top stop his multiple Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon, from killing Scrap Dragon.

Anyway, I came first. Playing this deck was really fun, but I realized a few things. Firstly, this deck has a bad match-up against any deck that can easily summon Kristya. Finally, this deck is a lot like Lightsworn. However, the deck requires more skill, and is just better overall in my opinion.
